McLaren Honda’s Fernando Alonso will spend the night in hospital after suffering concussion following a heavy crash in testing this morning.

The Spaniard crashed at turn 3 with his MP4-30 going backwards and then sideways into the wall. The double world champion was airlifted to a local hospital as a precaution however it has now been confirmed that the double world champion has suffered a concussion and will remain in hospital overnight for observation.

Alonso had set a time of 1m 27.596s putting him in 9th place. The Woking based outfit have endured an extremely tough opening Barcelona test as Jenson Button suffered a problem with the car on the opening day which meant that he could not complete the days programme while on Friday Fernando Alonso had the teams most productive day as he managed to complete 59 laps.

On Saturday the team suffered a reoccurrence of the issue Button had which Honda had redesigned however the MGU-K failed once again.

The team will be hoping for a better test here next week.
