(Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team)
Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell sees no reason why the
German manufacturer’s rivals won’t catch up with them this season.
Mercedes had their best season in Formula One to date in
2014 as not only did Lewis Hamilton win the Drivers’ championship but the
Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team won the Constructors championship. Cowell
believes however that it is only a matter of time before Ferrari, Renault and
Honda catch up with them as the regulations are the same for everyone.
Cowell believes that Ferrari and Renault will aim higher
than what Mercedes will do as the Silver Arrows achieved so much in terms of
development and have done a fantastic job so far in winter testing that they
can’t really go any further in terms of the development curve.
However he admits that it will harder to tell what Honda
produce this season as they are new to this era of Formula One and have been
allowed to develop their power unit just like their rivals are after they were
successful in overturning a ruling that said they couldn’t develop this season.
This weeks’ test in Barcelona will go a long way in
determining the pecking order this season in terms of performance as the
Barcelona Circuit De Catalunya is where the Spanish Grand Prix takes place and
teams will be able to look at their race data from last season to see where
they can improve on performance for this year.
