Alonso deal was completed weeks ago

(McLaren-Honda)

McLaren Group Chairman Ron Dennis has confirmed that Fernando Alonso was signed by the Woking based outfit weeks ago, when it became clear that the Spaniard was going to free from his Ferrari commitment.

Dennis went on to say that Jenson Button signed his contract with the Honda powered team on Wednesday night.

During the course of the team’s media event at the McLaren Technology Centre on Thursday morning, Mr Dennis confirmed that during the 2007 season the problems were not purely down to Alonso but that looking back on that situation now, Dennis feels that Lewis Hamilton displayed some immaturity during his debut season.

Fernando Alonso left the team at the end on the 2007 season, having two years remaining on his contract.

Dennis also confirmed that as Group Chairman he could have said that the team will have these two drivers, however he did not do this and he consulted with McLaren Racing CEO Jonathan Neale and McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier.

Dennis also confirmed that both he and Fernando Alonso have re-established their friendship and they both have the same goals and that it to be happy and be in a position to succeed together.
