Fernando Alonso has confirmed that it was extremely difficult to leave Ferrari. It was announced just prior to the start of the season finale in Abu Dhabi that the Spaniard would be leaving the Italian team who he had driven for five seasons from 2010 to 2014. It has yet to be officially confirmed where he will be driving next season although it is widely expected that Alonso will join McLaren Honda.
Last month, following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix the Spaniard stated:
'It is very difficult to close the door on Ferrari knowing that I will not work in the red colour next year.'
Alonso confirmed one of his main reasons for leaving Maranello was due to the fact that the he was unable to challenge for victories, championships and podiums and has he was unable to challenge for the championship.
Alonso has also confirmed that although he is unlikely to be challenging for podium finishes next season he has stated that he will be in a position to challenge for podiums, race wins and championships in the future. The Spaniard's last championship victory came in 2006 with Renault after winning back to back titles with the Enstone based outfit in 2005 and 2206 before moving to McLaren in 2007.
