Mercedes and Hamilton put the brakes on contract extension talks

(Mercedes AMG F1 Team)

The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team and Lewis Hamilton have put their contract extension talks on hold it was confirmed today. Although Hamilton has a contract in place with the Brackley based outfit for next season the team are looking to bind him to a long term agreement with the team like the that they signed with Nico Rosberg earlier this season.

However the talks will have to wait for now at least until the tense situation between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton settles down. Things came to a head between the pair at last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa Francorchamps circuit when on the second lap Rosberg hit Hamilton which result in the 2008 world champion receiving a puncture which eventually led him to retire from the race with five laps to go.

Rosberg went on to finish on the podium in second place and extended his advantage in the championship over Hamilton to 29 points.

The team have stated that they will wait until the championship battle is over between their drivers before they sit down with Hamilton to discuss the future. The team stated that they have no interest in any other driver and that Hamilton has no interest in driving for another team so that will make it easier for the pair to thrash out a new deal when the time comes.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has stated that right now the Silver Arrows and their drivers are just concentrated on the championship battle and that there in not point in discussing something that is a year and half away.

Hamilton joined Mercedes at the start of last season on a three year contract while team mate Nico Rosberg has been with the team since Mercedes bought Brawn GP ahead of the 2010 Formula One season and is now tied into a long term contract with the team after signing a multi year extension earlier this season.
