Red Bull have confirmed that they have signed Max Verstappen the 16 year old son of former Formula One driver Jos Verstappen. The agreement comes into affect immediately and will see him backed by Red Bull throughout his motorsport career starting with the upcoming Formula 3 European Championship round at the Macau Grand Prix.

Verstappen confirmed last week that he had offers on the table from Mercedes aswell as Red Bull and met with Red Bull motorsport adviser Dr Helmut Marko at the recent Austrian round of the Formula 3 championship at the Red Bull Ring. A statement released by the company read:

'We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team'.

Jos Verstappen raced in Formula One from 1994 until the end of the 2003 season. Speaking the new deal Max Verstappen commented by thanking Dr Marko for giving him the opportunity that he will seize. He also went on to thank Red Bull for having confidence in him.

Many of the current drivers on the grid have come up through the ranks of the Red Bull junior programme such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Jean Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat as well as promising youngest Carlos Sainz Jnr who is been widely tipped to be the next Red Bull backed driver to make it onto the Formula One grid having shown great potential while testing for the team.
