Haas targeting Ferrari power

According to a report in the Statesman Gene Haas, who has just announced that he has lodged an application to run a Formula One team possibly as early as next season has targeted a supply of Ferrari 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged V6 power units along with a Ferrari gearbox..

The United States is one of Ferrari's largest markets and for an American team to be powered by Ferrari would be a major coup for the outfit.

Having a supply of Ferrari engines brings with it an awful lot of marketing potential and indeed should the Ferrari power unit prove to be a reliable and quick engine it could prove to be an inspired move by Haas should the be successful in their attempt to enter Formula One.

Should the application prove to be successful it would not be the first time that the Haas name has been involved in Formula One as Carl Haas entered a team into Formula One in 1985 and 86 with the backing of Lola however, Gene and Carl are not related.

The team would be run by former Jaguar Racing and Red Bull technical director Gunther Steiner who has also been involved in NASCAR in recent years.
